I spent this past week in San Francisco for the Concertart.org workshop. It was sooo amazing, I got to rub elbows with some of my favorite painters. The experience was indescribable!
I did this watercolor in one night, as an entry into the Conceptart.org "Thunderdome" contest. The theme was "angels."

City of Heroes comic issue #8 has hit the stands! Wooooo!

I finally got around to taking some photos of this painting. I've
named it "Killing Time." It was inspired by Neil Gaiman's Sandman
character "Death."

Process: It's done entirely in
oil. The size is 36"w x 48"h. The rain was done by literally dripping
it on there, so in real life there is a bit of texture in the
canvas. I made a concoction of Liquin, Gamsol, & Rapid Dry
medium to do it. I don't remember the exact ratios of each because I
was experimenting and came up with a semi-runny substance. It's kinda
cute though, cause there is a 3D bubble at the end of every drip. In
certain areas I mixed the background color in with the dripping medium
so that it looked like the rain was in the background as well, not just
"in front" of everything.

I didn't use any black in this painting. There is a little bit of
Pain's Gray in the umbrella & her hair. But the dark areas of her
body/clothes are alternating transparent layers of Thalo Blue &
Alizarin Crimson. And in the background are various blues
& greens. The photo makes it appear black, but in the sunlight
this painting pops & scintillates with deep purples &
blues. I always avoid using black whenever possible.  Creating the
"effect" of black with various colors creates much more depth and
interest.

OK I think this will be my last visit with Yumiko. But unlike any other versions I have posted of her, this is the only piece done entirely with watercolor, there are no photoshop elements in this. It's too bad you can't tell from the scan, but in real life the pinks are pretty Neon.
